Question Has Computer CPU Air Cooling Technology Improved in Last 10 years ?

The title says it all. I am doing a new build and came upon an old (10 year old, then top-of-the-line) air CPU cooler. I was just wondering, because it seems like old technology (heat sinks, conductors and a fan) if anything has changed in air cooling in the last 10 years ? (I'm not asking about AIO's, just air).

Are air CPU coolers any better today than 10-15 years ago ? If so, what has changed ?

Not much, no. Transfer heat from CPU to aluminum fins using heat pipes. Cool fins with fan.

Might be easier to tell us what cooler you're referring to and how much it's going to cost you.

Socket compatibility would be a concern though.
