Haswell vs. Latest Intel Generations

How much extra performance will I get from newer CPUs? I currently own a i7-4770, which I got from my father when I got into university. Which is the main reason why I am reluctant to throw away this CPU. I would only do so if there's a huge gap between how this performs compared to a latest generation i7.

What really changes from generations to generations? While I feel comfortable with my current i7, I don't like the feeling of not being updated hardware-wise. Haswell is now 4~5 years old and I wonder what I am missing for not getting a latest generation processor.

i haven't seen any reason to upgrade my 4690k.

just not enough of a difference to make it worth it to me yet. i'm thinking another 2 gens and i'll upgrade. think the next tock in the tick tock cycle i'll look into things. especially with the price of memory right now. i'd need new ddr4 ram to upgrade past haswell and prices are as crazy high as gpu's right now

Okay, so now I'm kinda surprised to see how the 8700k performs almost the same as its older brother. I was really expecting a huge difference... Great to see my i7 still packs a punch compared to the latest ones. Thanks for the video though, this channel seems to do a lot of comparisions which may be useful later. And fortunately I don't do any VR or 4k gaming. In fact I don't even own a 1080p monitor. Guess I'd better get a new monitor instead of a new CPU 😛

Great point on the DDR4 ram. I didn't realize I'd actually need to throw my DDR3 ram away too. Back when Skylake was released, I remember still seeing LGA1151 motherboards supporting DDR3, don't know if that's still true nowadays. Anyway, if I were to upgrade to the latest generation I might as well get some newer technology ram too. Also, DDR4 mems are more expensive than DDR3 right now. Thanks for the input!

If you do 4k gaming your cpu will last even longer since then the gpu is the main bottleneck in the system. Also don't throw away a perfectly functional computer component if you upgrade. The 4770 still fetches some good money on the used market and there is quite a market for used pc parts (the higher end the faster they sell if priced correctly).

I personally never had the chance to experiment M.2 storage so I can't really tell how much of a improve it is compared to SATA III. Numbers say M.2 crushes SATA III, though.

I don't plan on 4k gaming anytime soon... I'm not really sure if people will look after an old processor like mine, especially if it's used. But anyway, from the opinions I got in this thread, I probably won't upgrade anytime soon 😛

Be certain about it. Your cpu is a popular used item. Basically any i7 is. When you do just toss it on there for a price others have sold for in the recent past and get some money back (100$ is easily achievable with yours still).
