Did AMD improve already? Last time I built a PC was in 2010. I passed on AMD because of its reputation in the past. I have been an Intel guy. Ever since Apple dumped Intel, I'm willing to give AMD a try.

yup not only has AMD improved massively with the Ryzen cpu's, but Intel has fallen on its face with it's last few generations of cpu's.

for the moment, AMD is the way to go if building a new pc. sure Intel fanboys will spout off a bunch of acronyms and cherry picked benchmarks to defend their beloved, but best bang for the buck at the moment is AMD. i'd not even look at intel until they get their act together.

I've still got working AMD Phenom II x4 955 PCs from 2006, a 2700X, 3800X, 7950X, plus a whole bunch of Intel 1150/1151/1155 and Xeon CPUs. My spares box is full of much older AMD and Intel CPUs, dating back to 80386 (no idea why I still hang on to them). I can't remember either manufacturer giving me more touble than the other.

After the recent over-voltage problems destroying Intel Series 13 and 14 high end processors, I'm glad my recent builds have been AMD. However, AMD experienced overheating problems on some early X3D systems, so they're not perfect.

If your last build was in 2010, it might be time to consider building a new PC.

Hard to recommend Intel right now except on the most budget of builds. 12600K is still competitive with DDR4, and 5700X3D prices are a little higher, which can easily take you into 7700X territory, which performs roughly the same in games. AMD AM4 side of things, the desirable motherboards are starting to dry up.

Most of my recommendations lately have been AMD 7700X based with DDR5.
