If the audio device has a yellow flag next to it in the device manager, make sure it has a driver and that it is enabled. You might also try downloading and installing the latest driver (from Realtek, if it's a Realtek device or HP's Support and Downloads) or use SlimDrivers and see if it will find the correct driver for you.
