Building roomate a new rig (he wants an fx-6300/990fx build, ugh, whatever) and I thought I'd give him my old (new) 750ti as an excuse to upgrade my own GPU. My goal is to get the best value card to hold the 1080p/60hz line for a year or so. Not sure if my CPU will hold the following options back as it's an overclocked (4.7) dual-core Pentium G3258, I just have little desire to spend major money on an i-5 at the moment. In addition, i play mostly retro games (Quake, AOE2, etc.) but would like to hop into something newer should I decide to (say H1Z1). My thoughts...

-GTX 970/R9 390/290 are too expensive for my needs or too hot/loud (lookin' at you AMD)
-GTX 950/ R9 370 dont warrant the upgrade

So I feel I'm basically looking at the GTX 960 and the R9 380 in the $200-250 space.
I'd love to use eBay/craigslist for its discounted prices but I think I'd like the peace of mind of buying new this time around should something go awry.

I've been an NVIDIA guy thus far (great driver support/efficiency) but I'm willing to jump ship for fun.

Lastly, I'm not exactly fond of MSI in particular but I'm digging their red/black coolers on their current cards.

Any advice would be appreciated.
