hi a;;
I have to buy an LCD widescreen 17" or 19" or greater and i have got only 6 hours to decide..My price range is upto USD 320 (= Rs. 14000).
please suggest the best brands and/or models for the same.
mostly used for gaming and programming ( dot net, maya, 3d studio, C++ and such) and movies.
as such I am an LCD illiterate so please tell me what all I should be looking for in an LCD for the above purposes.
Till then I am reviewing many models. So far I have seen the reviews of the following screens:
1) viewsonic vx 1945wm, VA 1912 WB (both 19 ")
2) Acer AL1916WAB 19"
all of the above have a response time of 5ms with max. resolution of 1440*900.

Please tell me about native resolution also and also if there is a quality difference between VGA connection and DVI ( I mean b/w digital and analog).

this is a list of the monitors available in INDIA( but its not exhaustive, there may be more also)

L.G. 17" L1752S Rs10100
L.G. 19" L1952S Rs14000

SAMSUNG 15" 540N Rs8300
SAMSUNG 17" 740N Rs9900
SAMSUNG 19'' 940BW Rs14500

BENQ 17'' FP71E+ Rs9400
BENQ 19'' FP92W Rs13200

VIEWSONIC 15" VA503M Rs8400
VIEWSONIC 17" VA712 Rs9800
VIEWSONIC 19" VA1912WB Rs13900

SONY 17" SDM-E76D Rs12000
SONY 19" SDM-E96D Rs16500

ACER 17" 1700S Rs9400
ACER 19" AL1916W Rs13200

Please tell me which monitors among these i should go for(although you can and should suggest other monitors also)
I have to decide in about 6 hrs. or so, so please help me out.

Hey KevinAr18 thanx for the response.
But you know what I did not understand anything as I am an LCD illiterate, no offense. Can you please tell me in detail what you wanna say..I mean I did get what a viewing angle is but you did not mention how much that should be for my purposes...please supply some some details man..thx for the response though :p
One thing I understood after reading the posts here that sometimes LCDs are not able to produce text clearly. Is that right.. And does a response time of 2 ms and 5 ms make a difference???
Also I have a geforce 7300 gt and it can run games at 1024*768 or a notch above at the max. And the max. resolutions for almost all the monitors listed above is 1440*900 which is way too much for my card to handle in most of the games. Is the max. resolution equal to native resolutiom??? If thats the case, will it cause noticeable differences if I play games at say 1024*768???

"... wat []is d best option.....they cost about the same

Of course they do. All have TN panels.

Nearly all widescreens have TN panels... exceptions would be Samsung 215T, NEC 20WMGX2, Viewsonic VP2130b.

So, according to you I should not go for any of these models right??
and what do you say about vx922??? Is it also a TN panel??

and i got to know the following about TN panels here

and in the same article its mentioned that there are other panels in use also like MVA and IPS but they are expensive. How can I know what panel is being used as its nowhere mentioned in the specs??
Man, I didnt buy a monitor today as i was too confused..
At my location there are very few choices available limited to the four monitors I wrote about. those are the high ends available over here. some more inferior lcds are available like LGs (which are too expensive at the same time lol) etc.
out of the four I have almost decided the vg1930. Can anybody who has used it (or even seen it) tell me its pros and cons as far as my usage is concerned??

Nearly all widescreens have TN panels
does that mean that the regular square (or 4:3) screens have other panels.please enlighten me.

The 4:3 monitors are UXGA. The Samsung 204B has a TN panel, but all the rest have higher quality MVA, PVA, or SIPS. If your PRIMARY concern is either low response time or cost, you'll want one with TN panel. Otherwise, you'll want to avoid TN.

so Hose wat do you think about vx922?? Its got TN panel or some other 1?

mostly used for gaming and programming ( dot net, maya, 3d studio, C++ and such) and movies.
and for my usage will TN panel be an issue???
can you please jot down some cons for TN panel that appear in practical usage scenarios and not theoretically??
and it seems every viewsonic model no. has got two flavors: widescreen and regular. So should I expect to see some differences in both flavors for the same model no.????
so far you have been really helpful Hose. really appreciate that.. :p

1. The VX922 is one of the best liked gamer monitors.. and yes, it's TN.

2. TNs have less color fidelity and more color distortion when not viewed straight-on. If you're not sensitive to color accuracy or viewing angle, a TN will be OK for general use. I'm guessing that 90%+ of monitors available today are TN... that's to keep cost down. Whether a monitor is widescreen or "regular", its characteristics will be that of its panel.

The best contrast is usually found in PVA panels, the best colors in S-IPS.

No monitor has the best of everything. You have to decide on what's most important to you (or the best compromise) and live with its shortcomings.

If you're interested in a non-TN, perhaps you can tell the board your budget, size preference, and whether you want widescreen. (Personally, I prefer the 4:3 UXGA... that's wide enough for me.) I'm sure you'll be offered some good suggestions.

Please don't buy LG M227WA or the 19 inches Monitor+LCDTV
The TV mode displays wrong color shades,
the DVI input & HDMI input doesn't display good text when connected to PC

The LG engineers displayed the same problem to all items in M227WA.
