Am a 72 year old fart recovering from cancer - plz give me a break here, Trying to learn - tnx - Planning for more online gaming like Ark Survival. Am running into slow sped problems.
Have a Z97 system with i5-4690K, running 8gb DDR3 mem on 2 chips - 2 more slots available - bought 2014. Should I bump this chip to a faster i7? More/better memory? Running GEForce 970 4096K ram,. Would like more speed or memory for online gaming. Crucial offering DD# upgrades and a Terrabyte SSD upgrade to my 250 SSD in the system. Have A GeForce 970 Graphics card. SUggestions on upgradging processor? Memory? SSD? DUmp this system and go with something new? Thanks all!

what sort of budget do you have?

although very incremental upgrades occurred for most of teh 2010s, it has been changing rapidly the last couple of years, If you can afford it, you should upgrade your 6-year-old design.

If you can't afford a new build, bumping to 2x8 GB sticks of ram and an i7 will give you a little more time, but that system is long in the tooth

Appreciate that input - and the internet has 'matured' as well.
Also, the CoolerMAster fan and heat sink blocks one of the memory slots. So still stuck with 2 accessible.
So, If I move up and have a $1000. budget is that too low? and which systems should I be considering?
ReUse the GeForce 970 - or is there better out there for a reasable Price.
I built this Asrock from scratch.... so am all ears!
Thanks for the reply!

If you have a budget of $1000, then there's no point upgrading your old system as a i7 4770, new gpu, more ram and a new psu, will cost a big chunk of it.

Intel isn't an ideal option until they come out with there next socket 1200.

You should consider an AMD system e.g.:
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard: MSI b450 tomahawk max
Memory: 2x8gb ddr4 3200
Power Supply: 650W EVGA G3
Case: NZXT H510
Graphics card: RTX 2060 Super
Total: $942

I'd recommend heading over to pcpartpicker and dabbling around changing cases and gpu's.
I'd also recommend going for an AMD RX5700 xt as it performs like a 2070 Super at a rtx 2060 cost, but it can be quite finicky. So opt for an nvidia card if you just want a higher guarantee of out of box operation.
Also, nobody uses 5.25" disk drives anymore, so most cases won't have 5.25" bays for disk drives.
The ryzen 3600 comes with a fan that's good enough, but you can get an inexpensive cooler if so desired, AM4 socket compatible.
The gpu's you should consider would be rtx 2060, 2060 S, 2070 S, or rx 5600xt, rx5700, rx5700xt, take a gander at some benchmarks if unsure.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! Looks like a nice build. I have a great case - CMSTORM with settups for the 2.5" drives, as well as the regular cd/dvd drives.
Will take a look at the site you recommended and see what I can ut together. Thank you!

Wow! Looks like a hot hot system - thanks very much for putting that together!
Running Windows 8.1 right now. If I upgrade my present system to 10, will I be able to clone the SSD to the WD SSD and then use it boot the new system?

Thanks very much for taking time to answer the question for me, a lot of research and tweaking there! Thank you!!

All you have to do, when you build the new system, is start a fresh install, using the latest win10 version, from Microsoft's media creation tool, and when it asks for your product key, it should accept your 8.1 key, upgrading it to win 10. You will want to do a fresh install anyway, with the new system.
