Having problems with ESATA cable (External Sata) first time?!

My hard drive is not powering up and its a sata 3 3.5" drive that supports 5v and im connecting it with a esata +power 5v cable. i dont get it.. my motherboard is a sabertooth 990fx 2.0 and my hard drive model is a seagate st1000dm003? please can anyone help me i'd greatly appreciate it?

Powered sata is only good for 2.5 inch drives.

3.5inch drives(that are not ssds) also need 12 volts with that 5 volts.

Can you give me a link to something external cable that with power esata 3.5 inch (5v and 12v) or is that not possible unless i use my PSU? thanks for the help i thought so.

I personally have a power brick with a 4 pin molex(looks like small notebook power supply with a 4 pin hard drive connector on it) and just use a molex to SATA adapter. Have used it for years and got it with an old USB -> IDE adapter(I still use the e-sata cable from my gigabyte P35 board as well).

Now my setup is for bare drives. If you have an enclosure, it may have a special power supply it needs. Sometimes it is just 12 others it is a 12 + 5 volt unit.

This is not a recommendation for these specific producst as I have no experience with them, but these aren't hard to find. You would need to add a molex to sata adapter cable to the newegg one.
