About 8 weeks ago me and my housemates noticed that we were getting bad lag spikes in pretty much all online games we are playing, around the time it started I was playing a lot of CS:GO and was seeing a lot of 500ms+ spikes. We seem to have a higher normal ping since it used to be 20-30ms on most games now never under 40-50ms.
I rang our ISP (TalkTalk UK) and tried to describe the problem, mostly had to keep correcting the person I was talking to as they kept saying "disconnecting" when that is not the problem. Eventually they said that they would send an engineer out to have a look. A few days later he turns up says he ran tests before getting to the property and we failed a metascript test (I'm 99% sure that's what he said) and that it was a problem at the exchange and would escalate it. Talktalk phone me 3 days later and say the problem is fixed and our troubles should stop...But they haven't. I've tried to talkign to them again, have tried to post on their forums but they seem unwilling to look at it.
I feel like to solve this problem I need to find out what the problem myself as they don't seem to have a clue and if it is on their side,be able to prove it and could do with some help figuring it out. Happy to change ISP's if necessary but not sure at this point if that is the problem.
Our setup is 3 PC's. 2 in 1 room, The other in the room next door all connected by LAN cables to a Huawei HG533 router. We have only 1 socket which has a filter and Phone + Router attached to it. We also have our old router, a netgear DG834PN which we set up to see if that helped but it didn't.
The line is asdl broadband, it seems to fluctuate between 8 and 13mb down/1Mb Up, used to sit steady at 13/1.
The Games we mostly play are WoW, SC2 & CS-GO. On our old netgear router we all had to have Static IP's and everything port fowarded otherwise we all got horrendous (2k+ ms) when logging into the same games. On the Huawei router this did not seem to need to be done as worked fine without for months before the problem started but havent 100% ruled it out as yet.
Other things we have noticed is that if any of us stream video even low quality stuff everybodys ms will jump 100-300ms while before I could be sat watching a source quality twitch stream or 1080p youtube/netflix vid with only very little ms increase (5-10ms) compared to how it is now.
Please could somebody advise on where to start the troubleshooting and how to go about it? I know some stuff so can give info on our hardware, change router settings, run ping/pathping/tracerts and anything else i can to do to try help you to help us
Thanks in advance
