About 8 weeks ago me and my housemates noticed that we were getting bad lag spikes in pretty much all online games we are playing, around the time it started I was playing a lot of CS:GO and was seeing a lot of 500ms+ spikes. We seem to have a higher normal ping since it used to be 20-30ms on most games now never under 40-50ms.

I rang our ISP (TalkTalk UK) and tried to describe the problem, mostly had to keep correcting the person I was talking to as they kept saying "disconnecting" when that is not the problem. Eventually they said that they would send an engineer out to have a look. A few days later he turns up says he ran tests before getting to the property and we failed a metascript test (I'm 99% sure that's what he said) and that it was a problem at the exchange and would escalate it. Talktalk phone me 3 days later and say the problem is fixed and our troubles should stop...But they haven't. I've tried to talkign to them again, have tried to post on their forums but they seem unwilling to look at it.

I feel like to solve this problem I need to find out what the problem myself as they don't seem to have a clue and if it is on their side,be able to prove it and could do with some help figuring it out. Happy to change ISP's if necessary but not sure at this point if that is the problem.

Our setup is 3 PC's. 2 in 1 room, The other in the room next door all connected by LAN cables to a Huawei HG533 router. We have only 1 socket which has a filter and Phone + Router attached to it. We also have our old router, a netgear DG834PN which we set up to see if that helped but it didn't.

The line is asdl broadband, it seems to fluctuate between 8 and 13mb down/1Mb Up, used to sit steady at 13/1.

The Games we mostly play are WoW, SC2 & CS-GO. On our old netgear router we all had to have Static IP's and everything port fowarded otherwise we all got horrendous (2k+ ms) when logging into the same games. On the Huawei router this did not seem to need to be done as worked fine without for months before the problem started but havent 100% ruled it out as yet.

Other things we have noticed is that if any of us stream video even low quality stuff everybodys ms will jump 100-300ms while before I could be sat watching a source quality twitch stream or 1080p youtube/netflix vid with only very little ms increase (5-10ms) compared to how it is now.

Please could somebody advise on where to start the troubleshooting and how to go about it? I know some stuff so can give info on our hardware, change router settings, run ping/pathping/tracerts and anything else i can to do to try help you to help us:)

Thanks in advance:)

on the router check that you have the newest firmware. if the unit a few years old see if the isp replaced that unit with a newer unit. check the phone line to your home see if bird or rodent have eaten it. try unplugging the phone and try using a newer filter..if the filter fails it could be adding noise. if you have a local store that has returns...try an updated modem see if it runs better.

Router is using newest firmware as of last week, will check for another update. ISP sent us that router about 10 months ago as our netgear router was capped to 10mb. Also already tried 2x new filters. Its hard to check the physical line itself outside the house as We live in a 2nd floor flat, but are the only residents in the building. (no sharing bandwidth issues) They still send this model out to new users I've read recently on their forums.

check the wires going to the flat make sure there tight. look in the basement make sure no ones tapped off your phone line. if it not hardware try using another dns server. (open dns or google). also look to see what server your connecting to. ask your isp if there a closer server or another one. sometime one server can be overload. try running a traceroute and few speed tests see how may hops there are between you and the main servers.

I will try and check it tomorrow, Ladders and weather permitting. There is no line to the other flat and the ground floor shop was installed before mine (got it done a few years after moving in here of my own accord).

How do i find out what server I'm connecting to? Then do I run speedtest and traceroutes to there?

log into your router on the config page will be the router ip info. like 78.000.00.xx. isp now dont have fixed ip for there user depends on your location that they give out a set range for there users. sometime depending where you live there be to dns servers and one can be overload and one not. can email or talk to a level two tech ask for there dns info near you and see if they can switch you to another server. all they do is push a new config file to your router.

This says closest test server is Birmingham,(20-ish miles from where I live)

This one says closest was Frankfurt, Germany

When I've done this to other sites while the lag is happening the ms and jitter is a lot higher. I will try all these again tomorrow while the problem is happening to see the changes and also check the line for physical damage.
