So I bought a Monster Digital Overdrive Advanced 128GB external SSD. It's supposed to get up to 140 MB/s write speeds but when i try to put a file on it it gets just over 100 MB/s for maybe two or three seconds and then drops down to 30MB/s. Is this something all external SSD's do or is there something wrong with mine? Maybe its a software promblem?

PS: Im running Win 7

Solution
This specifically depends on what you are transferring.

A single large, unfragmented, file? You may see 'speed' approaching the advertised.
A bunch of small files? It will greatly decrease.

Also, what USB port are you connected to? USB 2.0 or 3.0?

You might try a different port (on some motherboards some ports go though a hub which could possibly effect speed especially if there are other USB devices sharing it). Do you have other USB3 devices? Other things, your source drive may be the bottle neck, as mentioned if the file is fragmented it could cause problems. Also sometimes I've seen this when a hard drive is about to fail in this case your source drive would be suspect (I doubt the SSD would exhibit a problem like this) and finally are you sure the source file is good (if it's a video does it play correctly?).
