having some trouble overclocking fx 8350 please help!

This is my first time overclocking a cpu, I have an fx 8350 (cooled by hyper 212 evo) with an asrock 970m pro3 16gb ram @ 1600mhz 600w psu

I went into the bios to begin my overclock, i turned off turbo boost, when i went to overclock, it gave me 4 options (maybe 5 I don't remember) over clock to 5% @ 4200mhz(which is stock) 10% @ 4400mhz and so on, as this is my first time overclocking, I didn't want to do much so i just went for the 10% option, my ram speeds slowed down after the oc which i looked up and apparently is normal, but when I open up task manager, it says the max cpu speed is 4000mhz and when i start games (rocket league, bf4, gta v single player) my cpu never passes 3.92ghz.

Am i doing something wrong? if so, what? I know that my motherboard isn't the best but from what i heard the fx 8350 is very easy to overclock even without increasing the voltage. My ambient temperatures are around 17 degrees Celsius (62.6 Fahrenheit). I dont have any extra software downloaded at the moment except for msi afterburner which i used to oc my r9 390, and i only overclocked that a little bit too, without increasing the voltage.

Task manager doesn't always say the truth. Download HWMonitor or Open Hardware Monitor (I personally like Open Hardware Monitor better) and CPU-Z. These will tell you the actual truth and you'll be able to monitor your temperatures. Stress test with Prime95 to determine the highest temp and make sure that the socket temp doesn't go above 70C and the Core temp doesn't go above 61C (55C if you want durability). I myself own a FX-8370.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to overclocking, I downloaded CPU-Z and i did stress cpu and it said the cpu was running at 4.4 ghz (4399.98 mhz to be exact) and task manager said it was only running at 3.93ghz, thanks for the help! what were you able to OC your 8370 to?

no cooling on the vrms you motherboard is going to overheat... get a fan on them. watch the socket temps when you run prime 95 i bet youll hit 70c real quick.

I was able to overclock my FX-8370 to 4.8Ghz with my H100i, pretty easy. I would suggest getting another board though, as that board's VRM will most likely overheat. If you want to get a good overclocking board then it'll probably be bigger (ATX, maybe Micro-ATX too), so I hope space isn't an issue. Get an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 or a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3. These are great boards and are not terribly expensive and will let you overclock nicely without any issues. Good luck!
