*Disclaimer, I pretty much understand nothing when it comes to networks
So, for a while now my internet has been pretty appalling, so much to the point that I often DC from the network at times whilst doing things like watching streams, or playing games on my PC. We were recently upgraded to Virgins super fast broadband (Vivid), and I thought "yay this will be the last of my potato internet problems", alas, it was not.
My Dad is the guy in the house who controls the internet, think of it as a situation where he is the "overlord" and he has complete control, and he has his own router that he had Virgin plug their one into, meaning the new super-hub that Virgin installed is used only as a modem.
With the new upgrade to our internet, we were supposed to be getting around 120 mbp/s down, and for my dad (who is plugged directly into the router via LAN cable) it is pretty darn close, so he's happy with the new broadband, yet for me during the evenings when the entire family is in the house connected to the router, I get this - http://i.imgur.com/mIC8124.png
In the middle of the day, my download speed will usually peak at around 40 mbp/s down, and around 9 mbp/s up, which is pretty good for what I do mostly, yet is nowhere near 120. I understand that it's nowhere near 120 for obvious reasons, such as "I have a wifi dongle, not LAN cables" etc.
I can't plug my PC into the router seeing as the router is in a different room, and I can't pull up the floor and run a cable through the hallway, so I am stuck with wireless for now.
I also have a TP Link mains adapter thingy that has a speed of 500 mbp/s, yet when I plug it into my PC and the router, I only get 0.5 mbp/s down, meaning the mains adapter is out of bounds (unless one of you beautiful people can somehow troubleshoot that for me).
Here is a list of all my hardware that I think would be relevant to my problem, if you think there's anything else I might need to list, do say -
CPU - i5 4690k @ 3.4
RAM - 16Gb HyperX Fury
GPU - GTX 750ti
MOBO - Asus h81m-d2v
Wifi Dongle - Edimax EW-7811UN 150Mbps
