Having trouble getting laptop to boot from disc after showing "missing operating system"

Not sure what I did, but I have gotten to the point that my ASUS UL50vt will not start and keeps giving me the message "missing operating system"
I have went into the BIOS and set it to boot from cd/dvd and have the disc in, but it does nothing after saving and exiting
I also tried hitting esc after powering on and selecting the cd/dvd boot device to no avail

That message means it's looking at the hard drive and finding nothing.

Go back to BIOS where you set your boot order.

Is there another setting there that 'allows you to boot from other devices'?

It needs to be enabled.

When I go back to the BIOS boot order menu it give me 4 choices
1st boot device which I've selected as cd/dvd
2nd boot device which is set to hard drive
3rd boot device which is set to network
4th boot device which is set to removable device
