Having weird artifacts

Hi,

Lately, these artifacts are getting more frequently when im gaming (BF4), and the GPU isnt even hot. It never goes above 70 degrees, and mostly its around 60-65 degrees celsius.

It has been OC'ed, but not much. From 1070 core to 1110MHz, with max VDDC voltage 2.39v (Original 2.38) The artifacts are flashing, so its not there permanent. When I exit the game or alt-tab out, the artifacts isnt there on the desktop etc. It could be like lines squares etc, but now it's also like green old TV style that flashes... And the GPU was stock for all day today..

Is the GPU damaged? Is it possible to check wether it's damaged or not by disassemble it? Would the company actually see if I have opened it once? Cuz I applied new paste on it once.

Could a OC'ed CPU cause artifacts like this? Cuz its OC'ed from 3.8 to 4.3GHz with 1.38VCORE if I recall right.

spec
AMD FX-4300
Sapphire Radeon R9 270X 2GB (DUAL-X, OC Edition)
650w PSU (CoolerMaster G650M)

Solution

try changing it to the refrence model clocks( might be below your default ones, since urs is factory OC'ed)
check if it apperas in other graphic intensive applications besides battlefield, just to be sure its not only in bf, meaning it might just be the mantle api or something.

its the gpu causing artifacts, not the cpu.
and yes its probably because of the OC, try removing all drivers ( safe mode, driver sweeper program)
and reinstall diffrent ones, see if that helps

if its only battlefield, then it might just be related to that game only, meaning its a software and not hardware problem, check to see if theres artifacts in other games/benchmark programs.
if its only in bf, then u r all good.

Your GPU doesn't have to overheat to have an unstable clock. The frequency jitter can easily cause that without overheating. It is a GPU issue. You will probably be fine if you just down clock it back to the factory setting.

Different drivers won't affect it. I have tryed 13.12, 14.4 etc... Now i have 14.6 BETA. Doesnt matter. And my OS is just a week old, so I doubt its a driver thing.

But is the GPU damaged? For that little OC, thats weird.. Is it permanent? If it shows original, does that mean its damaged perm?

The artifacts aren't the result of a driver issue. It is clock related and it is usually the VRAM clock but can also occur with a core OC. If the artifacts are showing up after you have defaulted it back to factory settings, then ya, you may have damaged it. That being said, you can probably just back the clock off a little bit more.... to make the artifacts go away.

I dont use the Mantle thing. I dont play many games besides BF4, but it happends aswell in a sniper game, not as heavy as BF4.

Okay.. Could I have my core OC'ed, but back off the Memor clock? Lower than stock I mean.

I understand that everyone gets the OC itch but over-clocking a factory overclocked GPU isn't going to change your real-world gaming environment in the same way over-clocking a CPU by 30% would change your gaming environment in a CPU-bound game would. Usually, the cost outweighs the benefit.

I am happy to update this. Artifacts is no longer an issue! :) I even bumped the CPU from 4.3 - 4.4GHz with the GPU on factory stock with more improvement than before. I guess this GPU is pretty powerfull afterall. Thanks
