HD 4850 +Pentium D or HD 4670 +Athlon 64 x2?

Need help,

I want to buy a new graphic card, my old systems are Pentium D 820 & ASRock LGA775 Dual VSTA, since it only support PCI-e x4 (am i right?) I have to buy a new mobo (PCI-e 16x).
Another problem, i read that Athlon 64 x2 can easily beat any Pentium D, also very cheap (type 4800 +/- $50)

So for my tight pocket, what should i pick?

a) Keep my Pentium D 820, buy a LGA775 mobo (GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L /ASUS P5KPL-AM SE) and HD 4850 /9800GT or

b) Buy Athlon64 x2 4800, a AM2 mobo (ASROCK N68-S) and HD 4670/9600GT

I think both options are on the same price level.

note: i only have 400watt PSU (Silverstone ST400), 2GB DDR II 667

I have a athlon x2 and a 4670 and it works fine for gaming. If you want extreme performance, though your not going to get it. I can play all of todays games fine. Do not go with your first option with the Pentium D
 
My suggestion is buying a P45 chipset motherboard ($50-$100) and using your Pentium D 820 until you can save enough for a Core 2 Duo, I would suggest the E8400 - E8600 processors, same gaming performance as an Extreme Qx9770 for 1/8 price! AMD's best processors cannot compete against the E8400 in gaming IMO.
 
You are better off getting an Athlon X2 and going with a 4830 rather than that old Pentium and a 4850. The 4670 is not a bad card, but the 9600GT is significantly faster than that and the 4830 is faster still. If you can find a cheap 4830 and be in your budget with an Athlon X2 then get that. Just make sure you get an AM2+ board that supports AM3 CPUs so that you can upgrade latter.

As billj suggests you could also get a more modern LGA775 motherboard and use your pentium D for now only to upgrade it latter. Of course in the mean time the Pentium D will seriously hold you back, but at least to can overclock it to somewhat aleviate that.
 
By the way since your board supports the first set of Core 2 Duos you could get something like an E6700. You probably wouldn't be able to overclock it much though since your board would already be overclocking it's chipset to support the 1066FSB. If you don't mind trying to get it slightly used on eBay or something though you may be able to get it cheap and it can hold you over till you can afford a better upgrade. Just don't pay more than $100 for it because then your getting closer to the cost of a decent AM3 supporting board and a cheap X2 CPU.

Yes exactly, in my opinion... although you do the homework, read the charts and don't let this become a AMD/Intel thread.

Also the 4830 is an excellent card for $79, excellent performance, very quiet and cheap, also if you can find one a 4770 for $110 is also a great deal.

with this thread &the homework i did, came out this noob conclusion:

Really need to divorce with my Pentium D 820, any Athlon64 X2 is beating 820 all the way

Buy new mobo, Athlon X2 and Radeon HD graphics... this is a killer combo and much better than the Pentium D one.
