Hello,

I took the motherboard from a lenovo M92p and tried to use it with a HD 5770.

The VGA starts to heat up from the moment I start the PC and when windows loads the screen resolution is 800x600 or something like that.

Windows device manager doesn't see the 5770, but recognises that there is an ATI device. I tried a HD 3450 and it works properly.

At first I thought it was because I forgot to install the driver, but installing it didn't solve the problem.

Usually during driver installation the screen goes black and changes resolution a few times, this didn't happen.

I'm not sure what is the problem and how could it be solved.
I've been using this HD 5770 for years in my older PC. It may be possible that the HD 5770 is faulty, because my older PC has some system boot error during startup(I get an error message but I can press F1 to skip and then everything works fine), but I always assumed that the problem is with something else because my old system had a meltdown once.

Solution

I finally managed to fix the PC after screwing up the BIOS.

Where did you get the information regarding the requirements of...

The PSU is Raptoxx RT-600C 600W. I connected the 6 pin connector too, the same way I do when I use this VGA with my old MB.

I used the software provided by lenovo to update the BIOS and now the PC is unable to load windows.
I'm 99% sure that there was an error during the BIOS update, so I'll try to fix that.

I'll report after I manage to get it working again.

Look at the PSU label, because I can't find your PSU model, but the one I found that maybe the sister, Rt-600-PSP https://www.njuskalo.hr/image-bigger/kucista/napajanje-raptoxx-600w-slika-7649534.jpg The fine print is "+12V1 and +12V2 total output current 25A max. If your PSU is the same, you are better to get other PSU for the HD5770, because the HD 5770 requires the 500W PSU with 34A on +12V rail.

Usually the wattage does not tel you the whole story about the PSU, you have to see the +12V. Here is the info for the PSU and how to choose a PSU: https://www.tomshardware.com/t/power-supplies/

Where did you get the information regarding the requirements of the HD 5770? All I could find is this:
"450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended"
On the label there is +12V1 and +12V2, both 18.0A but I couldn't find the total output anywhere.

I've been using this card in my old PC for the past 6 years with this PSU. Ain't going to stop now.
In some games the VGA starts to heat up, but I always assumed that it was working as intended. I read that it has a heat problem. It's an ASUS HD 5770 CuCore.

However, now I'm afraid to use it with the new hardware from the lenovo pc. It took me 2 full days and a lot of head scratching to get the lenovo working again and I'm not sure if I want to take more risks finding out if it can see the HD 5770 now.

Update.
I've decided to try it again.

Device manager still didn't see the HD 5770 after fixing the PC and installing the latest drivers. I was looking for solutions online and I've come across a program called driver easy. I didn't like the software because the download speed was limited to 50kb/s and the download took 1+ hour due to the driver being in a 200mb+ package, but at least it worked.

It recognised my GPU as HD 5700 series and downloaded a driver which I had to install manually. Device manager shows HD 5700 as my VGA instead of HD 5770. I was thinking this was a problem, but according to the internet it's fine. I've downloaded GPU-Z and it recognised my VGA as HD 5770.

I tested the system performance in Heroes of the Storm. FPS reaches 200+ on low preset and about 60 at high/very high. Everything is great, except that the GPU is heating up like crazy. 91°C in just about 2 minutes of playing. It seemed to stabilise at 94°C but I don't think that's ideal.
I'm thinking that the HD 5770 was bottlenecked by my previous cpu, so the reason it didn't try to blow up was that it only needed to produce about 30 fps average.
Though applying new thermal paste is long overdue after years of use, I still don't know if this is normal.

I've also encountered a problem with mouse and keyboard input freezing for 1-2 minutes. This happened about 3 times and i think it always happened after I opened the AMD driver installer. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Btw I'd pick this to be the solution, but it seems I can't choose my own answer.

Glad to hear you fix the problem with the BIOS update.

Recommend to keep an eye on the PSU.

For the HD5770 overheat, may try to reapply the thermal compound on the GPU, also use software, like MSI afterburner, to control the fan speed to cool down the HD5770 too.
