HD 5970 bottleneck question.

I have a Core i7 930 as well as 6GB of DDR3 memory. If I am going to buy a single HD 5970, at what clock speed is the CPU bottleneck removed for that card? I know that it is utterly impossible to entirely remove the bottleneck from Two HD 5970's in crossfire, even with a Ci7 980X @ 4.4 GHz.

I was initially going to build an AMD rig to save some money, but the Core i7 would be much less of a bottleneck than an AMD 965 BE.

Well i am using an i7 860 @ stock with a HD 5970 and i haven't had bottlenecks so far, but its because i play at 1920x1200 with AA/AF.Lower resolutions tend to benefit from CPU more than higher resolutions(especially with AA/AF enabled).

I initially wanted to get an HD 5870, but the HD 5970 is the fastest GPU currently, and I want my new PC to last me for as long as possible.

Is it really true in some cases, higher resolutions actually results in more performance (higher FPS) as more load goes onto the GPU than the CPU the higher the res?

yes. hgher resolution scale better in dual gpu/xfire. reason is not the one u stated i think. its coz driver for such high end configeratiins r well optimezed at high resolution. coz they expect ppl with expensiv cards will have 1080p or better screen. which is y u will see that xfire scale is nill at 1440x90p, but in the same title same xfire scales 80pc in 1080p.

as for ur original question, no i7 930@stock wont bottle neck it. not at 1080p

Yes and No,
Higher resolutions won't give you more performance,however they reduce the effect of CPU and benefit more from VGA.
