Been asking around, but wanna hear more opinions.

What do you guys think about the HD 599 for FPS Games? In terms of Soundstage / Imaging etc. Without any AMP or DAC (Realtek ALC1220 Audio Chip / Purity Sound 4).
Also compared to something the AKG K701(702) / DT 990 / ATH AD700X

FPS gaming you want a SoundStage above 6.5 on a rating of 1-10, these are physical multi-pass reviews on an Audio Oscilloscope. This shows you a flat average of what the hardware is capable of. We as a listener are going to have personal preferences on the audio spectrum we prefer so your going to need to listen and find what you like.

HD668's and HD 661's are cheap budget sets that have a good sound that can cover a wide area of usage you're just going to want different pads right off, Stock versions are crap.

HD 598/HD 599- Good sounding, not a fan of the hinge used since it broke after a year of use. Pads like these soak up oil from your skin so they get nasty with heavy frequent use.

HE-400's- Planar magnets are harder to drive so you will need to use a little more volume than you expect, they are also way heavy. Stock cables are rather annoying, one is to short the other is too long, I had one custom made @ $50 for a 5 foot "Venus Audio".

AKG Q701- Sound leakage is way high not for use in a room with lots of noise, you will need to crank the volume way up in that case. Same velvety pads issue I dislike.

The HD599 is excellent for gaming. The 599 is just a revised HD598 with better bass and I still use my 598s for gaming. Had them 8 years now and they need their 3rd set of pads. Build quality is excellent unless you sit on them.

Rtings is terrible for anything except frequency graphs.

Best reviewer on youtube. Completely honest and has the best ear.

The 599s are $99 today on Amazon. Even at $150 they're a no brainer.

FPS gaming is better on sets with a more neutral bass, H400i, Q701 or HD 598's are less likely to hide positional ques with the beefed-up bass you get on the 599's, the graphs point that out. $99 for 599's yes that is a good deal though and worth the $$$$ you should just EQ the bass down when you game. :giggle: Hopefully, they last longer than my set did.

So you're implying that the 599 has bloated bass that isn't neutral? Deeper better extended, more correct bass than the HD 598 is more like it. Closer to the HD 600 which is the neutral benchmark. Although you're right in that the H400i and Q701 are bass lite and have almost none without EQ.

Sounds to me like if you owned 599s you had them plugged into something with a high output impedance.
