HD 6870 1gb or 7870 2gb

Hey you!

I am planning to upgrade my computer.

I am not on a strict budget, but I money is an issue...

So, anyways, I am going to buy a gpu, ssd and a psu.

The ssd I think I am going to buy is: Samsung SSD 840 Series 250GB 2.5" OEM

The psu is: XFX ProSeries Core Edition 750W PSU

The gpu is the only problem... I am thinking about buying the HD 6870 1gb card, to save some money. But then again, the 7870 2gb is abit better...

The 6870 card costs 1300kr (aprox. 190$), where as the 7870 is 1950kr (aprox 280$)...

Is it worth it?

Im just playin wow atm and just want to run it smoothly, preferably at ultra.


I have a HPE-418sc HP computer, nothing changed...

Will these things work?

Should I get a different SSD, PSU or GPU?

The 7870 is a lot faster than the 7870. Have you considered the 7850? You can get one for less than 200 and its a great gpu. You shouldn't need a psu that large. You could go down to 500-600w. I don't know much about XFX and usually recommend Seasonic PSUs.

I live in Sweden, so the 7850 is 50$ more then the 6870...

Yes because the 7870 will crush a 6870. Put it this way the 7870 is at the very leased competitive with a GTX 580.

It all depends on what games you play and what brand you choose. XFX is ok because they put the 7850 on a 7870 PCB so
the cooler fits perfectly as it does on the 7870. However, braands like Asus will use the 7870 cooler on a 7850 pcb, so the fit
and cooling is inferior.

If you can, I would suggest you get a 7870.

The only game im gonna play is WoW, possibly some mw2 but not much at all. I just wanna find out which of those graphics cards is the best buy. my only requierments on it is that it will (along with 6gb ram and a good processor and ssd harddrive) max world of warcraft!

I got around 550$ to buy all of those components and i would really like some money left, so therefore i dont think its worth to spend 100$ more for a bit better graphics card which might run just a little smoother.

so, will the better models be needed to max wow or can i get away with saving some and get the cheaper alternative?

Thats the problem, more than enough power. i cant put that much money into the graphics card aslong as it isnt a sick upgrade and im not sure if its worth 100$ extra for that upgrade. so, do you think that XFX Radeon HD6870 1024MB can be strong enough for my wow requierments and if not, what would be the most price worth card for me withing my requierments and budget?

You wont see the mid to lower end 8000 card prob either 2nd or 3rd quarter.

Yes, and arleij I wasn't suggesting that Radeon 8000s be an option. I was just saying that once the 8000s come out,
we won't be seeing any price cuts on the new products but the 7000s might further get their MSRPs cut down a bit.

I suppose there's nothing wrong with a 6870 either because you only play WoW. Keep in mind that all these cards are different tiers: the 6870 is a bit better than the 550 Ti, 560 Ti a little better than the 6870, 7850 better than the 560 Ti, 660 better than 7850 (without OC), and 7870 better than all the above.

For WoW, the OP definitely does not need a GTX 680 but it might be smart to future proof his gaming.

And I think Geforce 700 is way out of the ballpark because Geforce cards usually follow the release of the newest Radeon series by a little while. So if waiting for Radeon 8000 is not an option, then I don't think waiting for the new Kepler is either.

Are you an idiot? The 7870 is stronger than a 580, and two tiers higher than a 6950. The 7850, is more comparable to a 6950, but still decently stronger.

Here is my opinion you are only playing World of Warcraft right now and you really don't need anything overly crazy right now. The 7870 is kind of the middle ground between mid and high grade cards. I would go with one of the two cards because you really don't need to spend money when you won't feel the difference. I would get one of the two cards either a GTX660 or a 7850. The reason I make the Nvidia suggestion is because with world of warcraft nvidia has done better with WoW. There have been people on the forums who have had issues with there frames with AMD cards not to say they can't play it just fine I had a 5770 and ran wow during WOTLK on max settings so you can see you really don't need anything crazy. SO to wrap it up here is what I'm suggesting.

1. GTX660 or 7850 (The best value for you)
2. I would take the money you would spend on the Samsung 840 and perhaps move up to the Samsung 840 pro it uses a better NAND which will emit better performance for you. The 840 non pro uses a cheap TLC NAND where as the 840 pro uses a MLC NAND. Either way a SSD is a SSD and samsung makes great SSD's I just feel the better SSD is the Pro overall.
3. I also think you can save a little on your power supply as well as you won't need 750 watts with a GTX660 or 7850 something like this perhaps.
4. In the end its about what you intend on using your computer for I could recommend really crazy things but in the end you don't need them. It will be of no benefit to you. If you were into shooters like BF3, Metro those kind of games I would be okay suggesting a more beastly card but you don't need it.
