HD 6950 2GB Having issues with Skyrim (Possible Solution Inside)

Alright, this seems to fix the problem:

There must be a problem with Skyrim's Antrisopic Filtering and Anti-Aliasing settings. Because if you do it manually with your Catalyst (override it), then it works at 50fps maxed out settings. No lag at all!

Just make sure you turn off Antrisopic and Anti-Aliasing in the skyrim menu. And run these manually in your catalyst.

I know someone else had a similar thread. But most of the focus seems to be on there being problems with cross fire configurations. Well, I'm just using one 2gb HD 6950, and am having severe lag (low FPS) while playing Skyrim.

Here is what's weird. Skyrim auto detects that I can play at the Ultra settings. But when I get in the game, it's unplayable. I can max out Battlefield 3, and I have no issues playing that. Smooth as can be.

Is this probably just a driver thing, since the game barely just came out? I've tried fixing this issue using the V-Sync solution. But it does nothing. My brother actually has the exact same rig as me, except he's using a 1gb video card (the old card I had until this morning, when I installed my new 6950) - and his game plays Ultra settings without all the lag.

So something is wrong here.

What is the rest of your system spec's?

@OP, like omgitzfatal said, how many FPS do you get and on what resolution ?
List all your system specs so that we can help you.
FYI, the game depends more on the CPU, Unless you have a SB i5 2500k, you'll need to OC your CPU to get the most from it, see this

Sorry for not posting my specs earlier. I'm a bit of a noob, if I'm being honest. What I find strange is, even if my rig can't really handle it - why is Skyrim auto detecting my settings as being Ultra if it can't? Why is my brothers rig (which is exactly the same, with a weaker graphics card) not having these issues? Here is my specs here guys, I really appreciate you helping me out on this one.

I'm going to be honest, and say I have no idea how to overclock my graphics card appropriately. But like I said, I'm able to run Battlefield 3 maxed out, with no issues. Here is my TRIXX settings:

Okay...so this makes no sense at all. I downloaded FRAPS. And when I play, I'm getting 7fps which is just god awful.

However, when I alt tab out my screen, and then go back into the screen, my games FPS shoots up to 26-30 FPS. Still not great, but it's playable (compared to the 7ps) I was getting all last night.

How this makes any sense, is beyond me. Either way, something still seems amiss here. Either something in the game, or my card settings aren't tweaked right. Thanks for any help guys!

And I can verify, it does bump up the FPS. Don't know why.

because on the tom's review 6850 is doing really great.
i just purchase 6950 but i don't have time to test games with this card.
but i am sure there are no problems with this.
Because of course your know, 6950 must doing better then 6850 lol

I've been reading the forums, and other people have had similar issues to me. I guess at this point, I'm just not sure if it's on my end (if I don't have the settings for my card right, the drivers need to be updated when they finally get the updates out) - or...if there is just a glitch in Skyrim that is causing some cards to have this problem.

They talk several times about using both Nvidia and AMD's driver tools for AA especially, instead of Skyrims in-game settings. Apparently, the AA is not very well optimized at the moment.

How do you change the graphics adaptor? Mine is set at Intel(R) HD graphics family. Also, how come your CCC is so much more extensive then mine, is the some form of install that I missed?

What everyone seems to be missing here is the core of almost all fps issues when gaming with a semi decent rig. Please note, every pc is as good as its weakest component. If you have a decent gpu, CPU, RAM, MB, etc, then 9 times out of 10 it's your HDD... Unless your HDD is a SSD or 10000rpm WD raptor (which will nly give you 33% more than most) its your shitty 7200 HDD causing all you issues. Think of it as a connected system, where the weakest component bottle necks the rest.

Also your overriding graphics config (sli, xfire, CDC settings etc) can affect your gpu. Although if your gpu, CPU etc can cache, R/W etc though ram to the HDD faster than the HDD can respond and act, again that's your HDD's problem..... unless you have no idea about the associated drivers and software.

Also ensure when you update your gfx driver you do a clean sweep. Especially with ati. Oh, don't forget the files they store in the registry too.

One more thing.., sorry. The components temperature dramatically affects performance. Especially gpu. So make sure it's not over heating more than specec on full load.
