Hello,

I'm currently upgrading an old PC that my husband uses, I know it's pretty old and could do with throwing out but I thought why not try and get the last little bit out of it, now I've ran into a problem. I purchased a HD 6970 which is listed on the MSI motherboard compatible VGA cards but when I hook it up the fan spinning loudly but nothing is detected by the motherboard nor does it display an image. All wires are connected properly so I'm confused to the issue.

Current Specs:
MOBO: MSI - A55M P33
CPU: A8-3870k
GPU: HD 6670
RAM: 8GB
PSU: Corsair VS550
OS: Windows 10 64 Bit

So far I've tried:

1. Completely uninstalled all drivers and CCC through AMD clean up utility tool. No Detection
2. Reset back to default OS and tried again. No Detection
3. Disabled integrated graphics through BIOS menu. No Detection
4. Disabled integrated graphics through device manager menu. No Detection

Please could anyone help me with this issue. :)

I can only get an image from using the motherboard DVI / VGA slots, non of the slots in the HD 6970 display an image.

Just to confirm that the HD 6670 works no problem, I hook it up and put a HDMI or DVI cable in and it works.

When I hook the HD 6970 up and put a DVI or HDMI cable it just doesn't display anything nor does windows or bios detect the card within the system. Though I can hear it being powered by the motherboard by the PCI-E card within the motherboard as this starts the fan and PCI-E power connectors work because when I try running the card without the power connectors it shows a red light D1000 but goes away soon as I put the power connectors in.

Just seen your edit: I'm on about the HD 6970 that is not working.

So, when you install the HD6970 and connect it to your display, nothing is displayed. Is that correct?

Do you have both the 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connectors attached firmly to the HD6970? Are you using any adapter cables to power the HD6970?

Yes that is correct, by install you mean plugging it in right? if thats the case then yes.

My PSU comes with two 6+2 pins PCIe power connectors, therefore I use one 6+2=8pin in one and 6 pin in the graphics card power slots. Firmly I can assure you, I can't get that thing in any further.

Nope the PSU is running straight to the GPU.

Well I have another computer but I don't know if it will let me put it in due to the power supply etc.

It has:

CPU: i5-4460
GPU: GTX 960
PSU: 350W power doesn't really say much this rig is not made by me.
RAM: 8GB
OS: Windows 10 64 bit

problem is the PSU only have one 6 pin power connector. Should I still put it in to see if it displays an image regardless?

I've just taken the GTX 960 out of my other system and put it in. Even though BIOS settings were set to auto integrated graphics it still allowed the GTX to output a display from both HDMI and DVI. I must admit it come up in the device manager as Microsoft basic [something] but I guess that would have changed it I installed the drivers for that GPU..

Therefore I decided to try the HD 6970 just in case the GTX fixed something but not still doesn't work. Would you like me to send any pictures to see you can find a visual problem with the GPU?

Likely won't help to post pix, but up to you. I suspect a defective HD6970. You could try a RMA with the manufacturer. Even though an older device, it may still be under warranty. If not, you are no worse than you are now.

If covered, you could get a newer GPU in return. Worth checking out.

I know this might sound stupid but could I use the power from the VS550 to power the motherboard and get the other power supply to power the HDD etc. Like having two power supplies working different parts of the computer. I really can't be bothered to take out the power supply just to test the GPU. I may return it back to the seller as I purchased it from good ol ebay. £50 🙁

I've tried to make a request to see if product is under warranty but also tried contacting the seller to work something out. Thank you for your help!
