Hello. I consider myself a gamer, but I am not the typical AAA style gamer who needs everything on ultra with every setting maxed out. I mainly play games like e-sports titles and mmos. Games that are generally on the lower side when it comes to recommended settings. I was just wondering if a 1050 ti is a worthwhile upgrade given the type of games I play? Also, to get it out of the way before it is inevitably said, yes, I know that the rx 470 is something that exists in this world. Thank you for your time.

I don't understand, are you choosing between these cards or do you already have the 7850? If you have the 7850 I'd say no, it's not worth the upgrade. That's because the 7850 is similar to the R9 370, so in effect you'd be spending $140 to go from a 370 to 1050 Ti. Not a great boost for the money in my view.

An exception would be if you had a 1gb 7850. You'd then be limited in plenty of newer games, not due to a slow card but due to insufficient vram. In that case, your money gets you the boost in performance plus the vram to make all new games playable, that IS worth it.

The way I see it, an upgrade like this would be better justified by wanting a colder-running system, better power efficiency, or being fed up with AMD's sometimes wonky implementations of driver-based power savings, over wanting big gains in FPS. I had a similar thought process and held off buying a new GPU just long enough for Pascal prices to final come back to Earth.

Storytime: I didn't care if my PC ran hot (it didn't), I didn't need an upgrade since all the games I play don't max out my Sapphire R9 380x, but Powertune forced me to use workarounds like RadeonPro's clock/voltage locking and ClockBlocker just to avoid massive stuttering. Even then, I still got microstutter. Imagine taking your HD7850 and forcing it to run at 110% everything as long as the computer was on... Great space heater in the winter, horrible idea in the summer, loud AF regardless because the power delivery got super hot and coil whine drove me nuts.

After a year of fighting it, I snapped, and impulse bought an MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X. #noregrets

I apologize. This was my first post on the site, and I guess I didn't include enough info. I own a 2 gb hd 7850 that I have owned since launch of the card. I got very unlucky and this particular card is unstable with any real OC, so I have been stuck with a stock 7850. I have been out of the loop a few years, not really following gpu advancements/new tech and just thought I would ask. Thank you for your answer.

It's more of a side-grade than an upgrade.

The HD7850 2GB (A Card I own and used from 2013-2016, although I had the Gigabyte OC) ran everything I could throw at it well but with the limited VRAM and lack of DX 12 support it is clearly not future proof.

The GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB is nearly an identical performing card with extra VRAM and DX 12 support. And whereas it will do just fine, it won't do much more than your HD 7850.

In this situation i'd try to find a way to pick up the GTX 1060 6GB. It has plenty of VRAM and DX 12 along with SLI support in case you ever need it. Future proofing for Egames across the board. The 1050s do not do SLI.

Just to add if you use 1080P monitor, there is no point going above 1060 6GB, SLI isnt important as not soo many games are using it.
If you are stuck between used and new

You can compare Amd and Nvidia, with some googling of course, and making sure that your PSU can handle it.
GTX 970 and 980 is an viable option but they are rarley seen as many people have bought it.

if you opt for new which i recommend, RX 470/570 vs 1050T/1060 6GB (around 300$)i just make sure that you get it at right MSRP.
MSRP (or price at launch) for RX 470 should be around 300$ and 1050Ti for around 150$ (nowdays should be around 200$, and depends where you live)
And also, dont buy from china, they have many fake cards, usually you can spot them by generic pictures or like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/GTX-1050TI-2-4GB-DDR5-128Bit-HDMI-Graphics-Card-Game-Video-Card/142731775875?hash=item213b7a0f83:m:maeJf_9kPNX_JSW-JjMCVOQ

And what are your current specs of your PC?
