It may just be faulty. I had this problem with a Radeon 5850. The only solution was to exchange it for a new one and it worked.

did you try reseating/ trying a new slot?

try reseating your ram as well, ram issues = no video either

I've tried returning it but they said it worked fine.

Did they show you it was indeed working fine?

Check if there is a BIOS update for your board. As well I have seen some Gigabyte board have to have legacy mode enabled in BIOS for some cards to work.

I've noticed that when I plug my VGA into the DVI adapter my monitor has black screen, is it meant to do that?

The DVI adapter has to be plugged into a DVI-I (digital and Analog) port not DVI-D (only digital) port to work.

Maybe the card isn't dead yet. I've recently had the same problem with my R270X and it turned out to be a partial PSU failure. So try to plug another PSU to the PC.

The shop I took it back to, Microcenter, took my word for it. I was well within their 2-week return period as I tried to install it the day I bought it. All I know is the new one worked and the one I returned didn't.
