Does it connect to the motherboard if I installed a sound card or do I connect it to the sound card itself?

Thank you for anyone who responds.

Solution
If you've installed a soundcard, and your motherboard already has onboard audio, connect your cable to the soundcard. Then you want to enable Windows audio settings for Playback to use the soundcard. You can get to those sound settings from the Control Panel or an icon in the System Tray. Also make sure you have installed the drivers for the soundcard for your version of Windows (best to get them from the manufacturer's official site.
If you have any other questions, then list your computer hardware and Windows version.

hd audio, being spdif? hdmi? what cable are we talking here?

if you have a soundcard, forget the onboard one, think of it as it never existed, if it is still detected, see if you can disable the onboard one

if the cable you mention is spdif, to the sound card, no mainboard onboard soundcard

if hdmi, the sound card is disabled basically, the sound is procesed and generated by the monitor or the tv you use to connect to speakers
