HD detection during Boot

Hi together,

I've recently added a Maxtor Diamond 60 Plus 40.9GB drive to my first IDE port as a slave. During bootup occures following problem with this disc.
If I previously shut down my computer using Win2k and ATX-functions the drive will not be detected during a new boot process.
This differs from shutting down my computer using the power button at the front of my computer-cover. The BIOS (Award 6.00 Update, 18.04.2001) then recognizes the drive and autodetects it correctly. When power is supplied to all devices I hear a soft click-sound. This sound is missing during startup after the ATX-shutdown.
So what's wrong in the first case?
Is there any workaround?

Addon: My system is new. Board is from ABIT, with AMD Athlon.

Check the microsoft's update page for bug and fixes concerning Win 2K.
I also know that there is a problem in Win shutdown process that corrupts large cache disks in fast systems (>900Mhz). It may be your case.

Look to see in bios if you have a setting for IDE pre delay or something like it. If so bump up the value giving your system more time for the drive to spin up and be detected by your system.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!
