Hi. My dock does not power when I put in my Hard Drive. It powers fine when it is not attached to the HD, but not when the drive is docked. I'm trying to clone my old drive to a new HD-SSD hybrid. I have also tried with cables and it gives the same result.

Is it a bad hard drive, or am I using the wrong equipment?

Cheers.

Solution
Try doing just a regular Windows setup with the new drive in the laptop. Or simply plug in the drive bare and see if the laptop sees it fine in the BIOS. That should tell you if the drive is OK.

You did not really specify what equipment you are using. "dock" and "cables" don't give anything to go on, we need brands and models. Is the drive fine when used normally with the computer? If yes, then it should be fine when used externally. Please provide some better details about what you are trying.

Sorry, of course that makes sense.

I am trying to clone my old hard drive on to a new one, and when I first tried with a SATA to USB cable I didn't work, the computer never registered the drive. I was told that the cables often can be trouble, so I got a SATA USB dock, but the same problem persists. The dock is powered up fine, but when the drive is placed in it, nothing happens, and the computer doesn't notice anything. The dock and cables both had external power supply.

The drive is: HDD Seagate Laptop Thin SSHD hybrid, 2,5", SATA, 64MB - 1TB
The dock: Orico 6619US3-BK Super Speed USB3.0 to 2.5" & 3.5" SATA Hard Drive SSD / HDD Docking Station
The computer: ASUS K55VJ 15.6" HD

OK, that's different that the dock not powering up with the drive in it.

Shut off the dock, plug in the drive, turn on the dock. Then plug it into the computer, see if those steps work.

You should also contact support for the docking station you got, since you have a Hybrid, maybe there is something funny in the hard drive that the dock can't read properly.

Those steps did not work either, same result.
Is there any chance that this indicates a hard drive issue? I mean, I have tried with both a dock and a sata to usb cable and the same thing happens in all cases.

I will try to contact the the support, thanks.
