HD Failure - unable to open drive to recover

Hi guys, laptop recently stopped booting and started going into loops without getting to the login screen as a result of a hard drive failure. I removed my hard drive and hooked it up to my PC to see whether I could recover any files but I can't open up the drive at all. It shows up in My Computer but when I open it, I get an error stating 'Please enter a disc into drive W:' (I've tried Disc Management to no avail).

Anyone able to help with this? Also, does this seem more like a hardware or software failure?

Hardware failure - - specifically the drive in question. It's screwed mate.
You should have backed up the data on it months ago instead of waiting for the inevitable to happen.

All hard drives fail as surely as night follows day.

I would agree with Phillip Corcoran and say that the HDD is most probably dead. 🙁
Yet, i think that you can try to access it with software tools: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
In case you can't do that and the data stored on it is crucial, you will need to contact a data recovery company.
