Hi, I'm leaving for vacation tonight and I want to have a good game to play on the drive down. I've been hearing conflicting reports about my HD Intel Graphics 4000 video card either being as strong as a potato or actually being able to handle some modern games. My laptop has an i7 core and 8 gigs of ram along with 750 gigs of memory. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my laptop has Windows 8.1.

Thanks for the help!

Well, in regards to this game that's the case "allegedly". Also with other titles such as Skyrim, people have comfortably found settings to allow them to play with fluid frame rates that are presumably acceptable to them. Rule of thumb is anything below 30 or too much further from thereabouts becomes more like a slide show than a game. So no, there's lots of games that are far too demanding for the integrated families to handle at even the most bare...
Hi;

I have the same video card (on a slower i3). With plenty of fast RAM in dual mode, and the latest drivers, you should be able to play lots of games low/medium quality at around 24-35fps at 720p. Anything above those settings, and it will be unplayable. For reference I play Skyrim 720p on med settings (but textures on high and shadows low) and i get 35+fps indoors and 26+fps outdoors. Not the fastest, but playable, and you can always turn some other settings down a bit more for the extra fps. The downside is that it WILL dip, so you have to learn to live with dips in fps. If it helps, it is not as fast as most websites will lead you to believe, but not as slow as most gamers will tell you.

Intel integrated tends to be a coin flip in my experience. I've ran games better on hd 2500 than I have on 3000 or 4000, oddly enough. It all depends on the game in question, resolution and how you can comfortably tweak the settings to make it run adequately.

Claims to get 23-30 FPS on average with

Medium (Antialiasing ON, VSync ON, Blur ON, Shadow detail Medium, Texture quality Medium)

Thank you to everyone who responded. What I feel like I'm getting out of this is that as long as I lower the settings a bit, I should be able to play most games with ease. I'm gonna wait about an hour or two to see if anyone gives me a solid reason not to download Dark Souls 2.

Your processor and ram are perfectly fine in this case, and GD suggests a minimum of gtx 550 ti. The HD 4000 seems kind of comparable to a GT 440. But again, I've seen things work out with integrated graphics, and have read several testaments regarding your specific case online.

Geofelt, I have a portable charger that can plug into a car to let me charge my laptop during the entire ride. Sammy Sung, I've gotten used to playing Minecraft on my old laptop at around 20 or so fps, so having something around that isn't too much of an issue for me. As long as I can expect at least 20 fps, I will be more than happy.

I know this is old, but I also wanna say I am running Intel HD graphics 4000 with a 1.80 ghz processor, and 8 gb of ram. I run 80 + games on here at 35 + fps on medium - High settings, at 720 + with NO issues. I play Skyrim, Fallout NV, Sleeping Dogs, Stalker series, Payday 2, Risen 3, Insurgency, you name it. The card is actually pretty good, most of these gamers who try and say it's a potato are running $4000 PC's. They won't be happy with under 75 FPS on MAX for every single game. if you are like me, and don't need it perfect, yet still miles ahead of modern console, this "card" works fine.
