I recently installed a new 500Gb HD into my Dell E521. I enabled the SATA channel on the BIOS and the BIOS reports the correct drive and capacity. However, when I boot into XP, the new drive does not show up.

I checked under device manager and the new HD is there. The properties page shows the drive as working. Then I checked volume tab and here it showed up something different.

Disk: Disk1
Type: Unknown
Status: Not initialised
Partition style: Not Applicable
Capacity: 476938Mb
Unallocated space: 476938Mb
Reserved space: 0Mb

Where as the other HD reports back as initialised and unallocated space to be 0.

I assume I need to format but how do I format the drive if XP does not assign a letter to it. Why is it uninitialised ?

Is there something I forgot to do ? I don't recall seeing any dip switch like the IDE drives use to have.

Many thanks.

Nope. Just did a search and that was the answer. The drive is being formatted so everything should be okay from here on. The docs that came with the PC did not mentioned anything like that and I don't have any XP manual being an OEM version.
