HD wont boot

I have a pc with msi 7185 MB running two SATA 2 HD's from an internal caddy. I have attempted to install a new HD which is SATA 3, but it hangs at the searching for IDE devices screen. When I go to the BIOS and change the boot order it boots but very slowly, and the BIOS doesn't keep the boot setting?
