HD5970 Crysis 1440x900

Hey guys,

i know an HD5970 on 1440x900 is an absolute overkill,
but i'll be keeping this card for five years of more, so then im just
future-proof should i upgrade my screen.

Now my question is, will i be able to run it without problems? Because i've
searched tomshardware about this, and i found some people having problems on that resolution with that gpu. Is it because of the're gpu, or is it because they get SOOO many frames that the screen goes nuts? (if that's even possible)

It'll be fine, Make sure you have a CPU that can keep up, and also a good quality PSU

Uhm, well too many frame rates is never a problem. just make sure to turn on vSync.
It will make sure that the framerate never goes above the refresh rate.

I have an AMD PhenomII X4 965 @ 3.4ghz (stock) and the minimum psu requirement, an Pov Black Diamond 650 watt with TruePower and four 18 amp rails.

I know hdd's use up alot of power, but i only have two. I don't know the detailed specs but i'll give my pc as detailed as possible for power calculation.

Amd PhenomII X4 965 140 watt
(going to buy) HD5970 300 watt
3x 120 mm fans about 10 watts?
1x 180mm fan ???
2xHDD's seagate ???

Is there something else to think about? Thanks alot anyway

Well what PSU do you have?

I'd recommend a quality 700W PSU Or above

The 650watt PSU should be fine.

Each 120mm Fan use about 2.15watts each
Each 180mm Fan = 3.6watts
Each HDD 11watts roughly assuming older tech drives

But back to the hdd's, its said that those use up alot of power. But i have two of them (sorry that i don't know wich type they are ). What would be the average power consumption of two hard drives?
I'll think i'll be able to just get it right, and run it ok.
But i want to know what you guys think

Yeah HD's don't really use a lot of power, and your PSU is more than powerful enough to run those components.

I would seriously get a 24 inch (1920x1200) at the minimum, and even at that resolution 8xSSAA is needed to really stress the 5970.

In my opinion Id be far cheaper if you got something like the 5830(4890 performance) for $200 today and a 6830 when it comes out, then a 7830... Far more consistent FPS over 5 years and will cost you less than the 5970 (both up front and electricity bills). The self proclaimed "upgrade as needed method".

Don't you think a 5870 would suit you better for now? Next Christmas you'll be able to crossfire it for cheap, or in two years you'll be able to upgrade it again with whatever is out then. (In two years, GPUs will likely be 2-3 times as fast once again.)

Take the 8800 GTX that used to be the top dog 3 years ago, now its in the middle-low range of cards. Admitingly enough it still can perform very well at 1440x900 but that could change in maybe a year when you will have to lower some AA or textrues.

Again I must say if you spread out that $600 and spent ~$200 on each new generation of cards over 5 years you would get the maximum performance without wasting money or graphical horsepower. You would idealy upgrade to a new card just before you need to lower textures to increase your FPS.

Massively overspending for something MUCH more powerful than you currently need is simply a terrible idea. Spend 1/4th of the money on something like an HD5770. It's still definitely overkill for your resolution. It's not going to last you 5 years but honestly I doubt even the HD5970 would. Just spend $150 on a card that suits your needs and upgrade when it is appropriate. It will save you money now and in the future. Paying the premium for the highest end tech when you don't even come close to needing it is always a mistake.
A real monitor(1920x1080+) and an HD5850 would be a much better use of your money in terms of actual gaming experience and still cost significantly less than an HD5970.

Here is what I'd buy - while being somewhat £ conscious... :

BenQ G2420HDBL 24" Widescreen LED Monitor £154.99 or $242

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5850 "Dirt2 Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £209.98 or $327.85

These prices are from a UK online store - so US prices may be cheaper. I selected the PowerColor 5850 because it is cheapest here + still has free Dirt 2 game (not many left that do here). I must state that PowerColor is not my favourite brand. I believe XFX in the US has a LifeTime Warranty which is worth the little extra cost

5970 = £540 or $843

This little setup = £364.97 or $570.13

Could even buy 2 5850's + that 24" LED backlight 1920x1080 screen for £574.95 or $898

Only a tiny bit more than you were going to spend anyways - But... don't buy the 2nd 5850 until you feel you need it as it will be cheaper later.
This setup will also be the same or a "tiny" bit faster than the 5970 for some games.

PS I just bought this monitor and am Very Happy with it ~_^
