HD6850 vs GTX460 vs GTX550 Ti Prices

Hello all, i know the HD6850 and GTX460 typically trade blows back and forth but I have a price to performance question.

I purchased an XFX HD 6850 1gb for $126 after rebates, a Zotac GTX 460 1gb for $140 after rebates and an MSI GTX 550Ti for $118 after rebates.

As far as these three cards go, which do you think packs the best deal-to-performance ratio? Which do you think will come out on top and by what amount? Which is more "future proof?"

First, the 550TI is weaker then the other two. If the 6850 and GTX460 are similar, and the 460 costs more, then just cross it off the Price/performance ratio right now. These leaves you with the 6850 and the 550. Considering the 6850 cost a big $8 more then the 550, I would say it's the "winner". You always take a chance with rebates, and if you needed an Nvidia card for CUDA apps you own or for 3D then it might change. But for pure gaming, the 6850.

Well, because they were the last ones on the shelf and the sales people touted each one.

One claimed he ran Crysis at full quality on his GTX 550 Ti even though Nvidia doesn't recommend it for that and that it would be more than enough for my use (web games, Quake 2, Sims 3, etc...).

Another rep said the GTX460 will blow the other two out of the water.

Finally, another rep said the HD 6850 really packs a lot of features for the $15 less price, is newer and should compete pretty well with the GTX 460.

That's why i picked up all three.

If you don't plan on playing any modern games for sure then you dont need any of these cards.
I would keep the gtx 460 and overclock it since it overlocks like crazy. You basically have yourself a gtx 560 at lower clocks. They are identical in performance at the same clocks.

Just return the other two. Keep the 6850.

Wow this is new. Bought all three?... Just as a side note, the Nvidia cards have a couple of extra (non life-changing) features , and are better supported. But purely price/performance, its the 6850

Well i'm now running them through a simple benchmark - Unigine Heaven DX11.

I will post my results of the HD6850 and GTX460 as those seem like likely winners.

Are the results of this benchmark solid enough to chose a card from?

no the results of this benchmark are not good since it favours Nvidia cards due to their specific benefits in tesselation (?) I am not 100% on this but I am fairly sure.

But it's very simple, if you keep the cards at stock the 6850 wins almost everytime (except for cases like Unigine)... when both are overclocked the 460 might pull ahead but they would be fairly similar.

The only problem I have with my 6850 is that it sounds like a vaccum cleaner (asus 6850) and my friends 460 can't be heard

Thats odd you mentioned it favoured NVidia as so far stock, the Hd6850 fps 31.6, scores 797, min fps 16.6, max 68.8 while the Gtx460 fps 26.1, score 658, min fps 15, max 62.5

I,m going to try a mild overclock shortly.

I've actually checked around and I was wrong, sorry.

Nvidia cards were favoured only when compared to the ati 5000 series, such that a slower Nvidia card (ie. gtx 460) would be beating or scoring the same as a faster ati card (5870) in the unigine benchmark.

But the 6000 series are better at doing dx11 i guess so there is no difference.

I have two GTX 550 tis and if I had to do allover again I would have gotten the 560's or the 460's I haven't had goodluck with the AMD cards. But the 6850 is the better card for the money. I have to agree with everbody else. I just prefer Nvidia cards

overclock them both as high as you can and use voltage . i want to see how they compare

In unigine under opengl, the Gtx460 had 25.2 fps, scored 636, with min fps 7.3, max 50.1. The Hd6850 had fps 23.7,score 598, min fps 6.5, max 59.

Just said screw it and bought two HIS HD6870 for CrossfireX - getting more than 60fps with quad-digit scores.

Crossfire kicks serious a$$. I do have very, very, very light microstuttering but only in my older games (Aliens versus Predator, Land of the Dead).
