I have quite a quandary. The overall problem: can't get 2K resolution on a new monitor

Some context: I have an older system, consisting of an HD6870 and an i5-2500K. The HD6870 has 2 mini display ports, 1 HDMI, and 2 DVI ports (one single link, one dual link).

I purchased a new monitor (ViewSonic VX3276-2k), but am never able to get 2K resolution to display, despite trying the following:

used a mini displayport to displayport cable (neither mini DP on the video card worked)

used a dual-link DVI cable to displayport cable (didn't work)

uninstall/reinstall multiple times the drivers for the 6870 - I tried both Catalyst and Crimson, with proper full uninstalls and reinstalls and reboots

Strangely, I DO get a picture when I connect with HDMI - but that's only at 1080p. When I try to manually force the input to change on the monitor from HDMI to displayport, it will just say "no signal" and turn off. I have tried doing hard power resets, with no success.

Thoughts? I'm tapped out of ideas.

Dual-link DVI works fine on the HD6870, I used it on 2560x1600. So your active adapter cable must actually be rated for this resolution. It is much easier for the adapter manufacturer to make it only Displayport 1.1 as that is 165MHz just like DVI. Displayport 1.2 is 300MHz and the HD6870 was the first ATI card with it, however the first implementation of anything is usually buggy.

HDMI is out because the card's port is HDMI 1.2, equivalent to single-link DVI, which of course can only go up to ~1080p. Any DVI to HDMI pin-adapter will also have this single-link 165MHz limitation. It is of course technically possible to make an active dual-link @ 165MHz to single-link 340MHz (as HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 use). However such an adapter would...
2K equates to a maximum resolution of 2560×1440 as opposed to HD's standard 1920×1080.

Mini DisplayPort 1.2 to DisplayPort 1.2

Thanks for responding, but I'm not sure I understand. I am attempting to get 2560x1440 to show on my monitor which supports that resolution, but for whatever reason, my video card (which should be capable of supporting that in a variety of different formats) does not seem to be sending a signal.

The mini displayport to displayport cable I'm using is here.
I have also tried using an HDMI 2.0 cable, but that makes no difference (still capped at 1920x1200).

However such an adapter would likely cost as much as a newer and faster video card with 600MHz Displayport and HDMI outputs.
