Hdd app startup problems

When I startup my PC sometimes it won't register anything downloaded on my hard drive. In order for it to be recognized I have to (nearly every time I log in), set it to the (D drive. I have to go to disk management, right click the hard drive, and change it to (D. What do I need to do so that this stops happening?
I am on Windows 10. The hard drive is a 1T Western Digital.
