HDD attached to Router Security Question

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I recently added an external HDD to my router for storage. After attaching the drive, setting the drive up in the router settings, and, accessing the drive through Windows 7, I was asked for a username and password. When I used the same information for connecting to the router, I was informed that the username or password was wrong. I proceeded to reset everything, changed passwords, etc, in an attempt to make it work. After an hour, or so, of trying with no success, I thought, "It couldn't be 'admin', could it?" Low and behold, it worked. I had access on my computer to the external HDD.

Which leads me to my Derp Question.....

To gain access to my network, a user needs my username and extensive password, but, once they're in, to enter the HDD, it's the basic 'admin' & 'admin' set up. Is this a security concern? Can someone access my network by getting in through the HDD, and bypass the security that I have set up?

Again, thank you for any input.

Routers featuring USB sharing typically have a user account control page for access to USB drives. This is completely separate from the password for access to wifi.

By itself it does not allow access from outside your network, but anyone that has access within or gains access maliciously can potentially access your data. It is certainly a security concern and you should consider changing this password at the soonest opportunity.

Check the user manual for your particular router, or look through the router settings for USB access.
