HDD console transfer. Do I need to format?

As title states, I'm plugging my HDD into the new Xbox one x that was previously used by a normal Xbox one. Must i reformat the drive?

What does your Xbox say when you plug it? If it needs formatting, you'll know because you won't be able to use it.

I honestly haven't tried yet. I will though. I'm hooking it up tomorrow so I was just wondering if I should just reformat now on the old Xbox or just hook it up and then reformat on the new Xbox if it needs too.
