Hi everyone!

I have accidentally plugged my external hdd case (with seagate barracuda) into a 19v power supply, instead of the 12V, and fried the pcb. I have tried switching over the pcb from another, identical drive but with different fw, with no luck. Will the firmware difference matter if I solder the bios chip from the old board into the replacement board? EDIT: I know now firmware=bios 😉
Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the TH community, Odeee!

I'd strongly recommend you to turn to a professional data recovery company if you need the files from your external drive so badly. Attempting to fix an overpowered drive is highly unlikely to get you anywhere, especially if you physically temper with it. Dismantling the drive requires you to have the specific technical knowledge and dust-free environment, otherwise you might have worsen the damage.
I'd advise you to get in touch with the manufacturer's customer support and ask for assistance with it. They might also be able to refer you to some data recovery companies.

Best of luck!

i agree with supersoph that trying to fix it yourself is a lot more risky in terms of risk of losing the data on it, however the information would have to be highly important for you to send it too a data recovery, i doubt its just a simple 29.99$ fix or something like that, it could and most likely would cost a lot more than that.

I can`t afford to send it to a data recovery center. I have all the tools and experience to replace the 8 legged bios chip and solder it to the other board I have though...

ok,if anyone else wonders yes the original bios is required. I guess Ill find out if there`s any fuses before going ahead transplanting the bios. Should anyone know, please post 😉
