Context: I recently bought a new SSD (intel OPTANE 900p 280gb) with a U.2 connector and ran into a problem after adding it to my build. some of my hard drives disappeared and it seems like it could be due to a compatibility issue but I found nothing about it so I will need you help to see if my SSD is not causing problem to other drives through my motherboard capacity.
So I will first list my Hard drives that were plugged in my z170x before I bought the new drive:
-TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
-Toshiba P300 3TB 7200RPM 3.5" SATA
-Intel 600p 256 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe
-ASUS DVD RAM GH95N ATA Device
Then here is the list of drives that still appear after installing the new drive:
-Toshiba P300 3TB 7200RPM 3.5" SATA
-Intel 600p 256 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe
So,
-ASUS DVD RAM GH95N ATA Device
-TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
stopped working.
thought if I unplug it and reboot they reappear. I tried changing SATA connectors from motherboard and from PSU in all combination possible. U.2 is not supposed to disable SATA anyways. When I change connectors from one to another I always get the same drives not responding, the 1tb HDD and the DVD reader so I know that it isn't disabling SATA ports. I checked the User manual and can't find relevant information about compatibility or U.2 connector installation. I did everything I could to find them from using windows 10, in disk management and in diskpart/list disk etc. It can't be my Power supply either since it is not overloaded. My big problem is that I want to install an OS on it and run this 1tb HDD and 3tb HDD as storage to accompany it and if I need to unplug it to see the 1tb drive it will be impossible to run the OS. Finally I tried to connect old laptop hard drive in SATA while the new drive was there and it shows up. Only the DVD and Toshiba DT01ACA100 don't show up...
One useful info that I thought to add here is that my DVD and My HDD (1tb) are both from one of my old stock build which I took pieces out and date from 2013! This is why I thought it could be incompatible with to new SSD and because all SATA ports are still functional after all.
Question: Could it be that my motherboard is limited to a certain amount of Hard-drives? Or that U.2 is not compatible with some of my hardware? Do you think it is possible to fix this issue somehow?
Thank you for taking time to read and helping me resolving this issue! 10/16/2018
