So I'm working on a family members computer, it was a prebuilt gaming PC they paid WAY too much for. They started getting BSODS and eventually it wouldn't boot anymore.

Now I ordered a new HDD and tried installing an OS, each time I go to install it, I get an error after expanding windows files, saying it's missing a certain file of some sort. I figured my OS was corrupt so I used Rufus to Los up 8.1, same problem.

Now the funny part is EVERY time I try installing the OS and it fails, I try to go back to reinstall it, to select my partition, the HDD is gone, like it never existed.

I reboot, check bios, no HDD. It won't find any HDD until I physically unplug the HDD and plug it back in.

Anyone ever had this problem or know anything I can try? Thanks in advanced

Sometimes consumer-desktop HDDs will "disappear" from their controllers when they enter deep error recovery mode. I would suggest you test the HDD by using the bootable HDD test utility provided by your HDD manufacturer. Alternatively, use Hiren's Boot CD - it has all the major HDD manufacturer's HDD testing programs on it. Check the HDD for errors using the appropriate utility because it sounds a lot like you got a defective HDD.
