HDD has 'Bad Clusters' after CHKDSK. How to fix? (Pictures)

I'm scared to reboot, since my HDD is no longer seen by windows in explorer.exe

I used 'chkdsk /r /f /x' on my D drive (7200rpm HDD) and it found bad clusters.

and

So yea, should I restart? I don't think the SSD is capable of loading into Windows 8 alone without the HDD. They seem to be 'married'.

It says I don't even have enough space to replace bad clusters.... why not? It's a 2tb drive. What do I do?

Hi

Chkdsk found the bad sectors it did not create them,
But it should prevent the parts of the hard disk affected being used
If critical windows files are affected you may not be able to start windows

You need to get a bootable diagnostic program for the hard disk which is specific to that make of hard drive
If you power down you can open the case and see what make & model if you do not know
Common brands Seagate who owns maxtor & Samsung
Western digital , Toshiba, Hitachi

If a recent design of motherboard then get a new version from hard drive makers web site
Usually available as a ISO image intended to be burnt to cd

If a few years old use Hirens boot cd which has a collection of diagnostics which is a few years old
There is a WD data lifeguard for windows included which may be easier to use

You should get a report if the disk is repairable or not.
If repairable this is only a temporary repair

You need to be ready to rescue any data not previously backed up and replace the hard drive

I hope you have your windows DVD or system recovery disks ready

So I have a Seagate 7200rpm Barracuda HDD. Your saying Windows already marked the messed up sectors, and is fine for now?

It seemed to end (chkdsk) after finding these sectors. What software do I use? I'm not really sure.

Edit: Should I format the HDD then run chkdsk?

Maybe I was not clear enough
Your disk is dying and needs replacing no point in re installing Windows

If you go to seagate web site you will find diagnostic software which does a thorough job of testing hard disk

If you can boot up into windows (in safe mode with networking) start backing up important data
(to cloud, over network, external hard disks etc)

If Windows will not start in safe mode you need to bootup from a rescue disk such as Hirens boot CD or a Linux live distribution (Gparted) and start rescuing your data. (USB & CD versions available)

If you have valuable data on the hard drive (which is not backed up) then go to a data recovery company.

Running chkdsk on a damaged hard drive can make things worse

If this is too complex for you go to someone who has the necesary skill & experience

Thanks, I tried the test and SMART failed, so did Short 'Drive Self Test'.
