My old drive was acting up, and just being slow in general. Towards the end it got kind of noisy too. Seagate's diagnostics said there were problems with it, so I got a new drive.

I bought a 3TB WD black, but it's still just giving off a constant sort of grinding noise. I heard the WD black is a bit loud but this seems excessive. This one seems like it's performing fine, but the noise is making me paranoid. Not to mention how annoying the sound itself it. The only thing I can think of is that I noticed the SATA cable wasn't really clicking into place. Could a bad cable be the problem here?

Hi there dami527,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁
Even though WD Black has slightly higher acoustics levels, it shouldn't really that bad.

The first thing you should do is to back up the most important data stored on the drive until you sort this out.

It is possible that some cable/port related issue is causing this. So, it may be a good idea to connect the drive with different SATA and power cables. You can connect the drive to another port as well. Also, make sure that the HDD is tightly fastened.
In case the issue persists, you can test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool.
