If the HD is Sata based.

Then you must look at your manual that came with your motherboard.
The reason why is because some motherboards have two Sata controller chips that are used on them.
The first is an Intel based Sata chip set, and the other chip set can be of a different make, brand.

They may both have to be enabled in the bios,

Depending on what Sata port you used on the motherboard.

The manual will tell you what Sata ports the drive must be connected to, what ports the Intel Sata chip uses of the motherboard.

And what Sata ports are used with the second Sata chip controller such as a Media Tek Sata chip set.

If you install a driver, but the drive does not work, it means you have to connect the HD to the right set of Sata ports based on what driver and sata chip set enabled in the bios, or you wish to use.

Only one Sata chip set is enabled by factory default settings in most cases, and the second has to be enabled by the user, if two Sata controller chip set`s exist on the motherboard.

Make sure you have the power connected to the drive as well as the Sata data cable.
Sounds stupid I know but people sometimes forget to connect the power as an oversight.
