HDD not detected

Ok, so I recently got a free computer made in 2000. It has a Pentium III-MMX Coppermine CPU clocked at 400 MHz, 128mb DDR ram, an NVidia TNT2 Model 64 with 32mb vram, a Crystal Audio soundcard, some AOpen 48x CD drive, Iomega Zip disk drive, generic 1.44mb floppy disk drive, and a 250watt Sparkle Power psu.
It didn't have a HDD though
So I went out and got a used, 40gb IDE drive (as the computer doesn't have SATA ports), slapped it in the computer, plugged it in, set the jumpers, fired up the computer, aaaand...
The bios freezes and the HDD is not detected. Yay.
I've gone around the internet looking for an answer but no luck.
The hard drive works, I tested it in my main computer
Also, this has no documentation, apparently it's made by Tangent Computer
And it has the Award Modular BIOS v4.51pg
I've tried switching the cables, switching up jumpers, plugging the HDD into IDE2, nothing, except the bios doesn't freeze when it's plugged into the second ide port
Somebody help me!
