So my computer recently shorted and jacked up a bunch of stuff. Things like my mobo, cpu, ssd, and a drive. I replaced all of these but a drive that was showing before i replaced the ssd is no longer showing. I unplugged the ssd but left my WD hdd in and then the WD didn't show. Either one or the other shows. Any idea as to what I should do to either fix the drive or recover the files? All my game saves were on there...pls help.

if either one or the other shows up but not both the controller may have taken a hit and can only see one drive. is there an optical drive? unplug it and try that port.
the port/controller on the mobo may be bad. retest your old ssd in another system. it may yet be good. you may need an sata to usb adaptor and connect the drive through the usb.
cable may be bad too, swap those out and try.

I just replaced the mobo after the incident so the ports shouldn't be a problem. Althought I still tried what you said with switching the hdd and the dvd drive sata cable and the ssd is still the only thing showing. Same happened when I tried a new cable. Any other thoughts?

so new mobo and it only shows one drive at a time?
did you replace/test the PSU?

Hi there Techn0Smile,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁

So, you've tried using different ports, SATA and power cables right? I guess it will not hurt to attach it to another system as R1 already suggested.
Another thing you can do is to go to your MOBO's website and update all the drivers(especially the SATA ones).

In case the issue persists and the drive is not even recognized by BIOS, I guess it was damaged.

If you have some crucial data stored on it, it may be a good idea to contact a data recovery company.

Let me know how this goes,

I have not tried changing the psu but i have the most power consuming computer in my house and ive already dumped upwards of $300 so I don't see that happening anytime soon. I will try to look for new drivers and will fill you guys in on what happens.

in that case you can test the power supply by putting it in another system and seeing if it starts acting weird. while it's in there you could test your parts with it's power supply. you'll at least be able to see if the drives are readable again.

I got new SATA drivers and went into the bios to see if it saw both drives, but it still only saw one. I went into advanced mode for whatever reason and then into boot and I saw this...

It sees both drives here but i can't seem to find it anywhere else.
Thoughts?
