What options does it give you when you right click on that space in Disk Management?

Make and model HDD?

Did you run the HDD manufacturer's disk diagnostic software?

Windows 10? Run the built-in troubleshooter.

"WIN" + "I" > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Hardware and Devices

Was it working previously?
What was the last thing you did before this happened?

yeah, it's a new drive. The only available options when I right click are 'convert to basic disk,' 'convert to MBR disk,' 'offline,' 'properties,' and 'help'

New Simple Volume is what you want.
Then Format, and give it a drive letter.
Then you're done.
