Question HDD performance question

I keep a large amount of archive material on my desktop machine. I try to keep it on a single drive and currently have a WD Gold 22TB installed. However, the performance of this drive is very disappointing. I haven't looked much into the technical performance but so far all apps are reporting it healthy and without problems.

In use - Windows 11 - it can take more than 15 seconds for the contents of a directory to display in a File Explorer window. The drive replaced a WD Red Pro where there was no appreciable waiting time for similar information to display.

Just wondering whether anyone had experienced anything similar and maybe found a solution. Or this simply a limitation of very large drives?

How many thousand files do you have in that directory? Windows file system is not efficient with 10,000+ files in a single directory.

Ahh, thanks, should have said - directory may have just a dozen or so files in it.

The interesting thing to me is the comparison between this really big drive and the only pretty big drive (18TB) which it replaced.

Is this 22GB drive connected via USB or SATA ?

If the drive was powered down for energy savings,
it could take 15 seconds for the platters to spin back up.

The file system isn't a problem, it's File Explorer wanting to read every file's meta data so it can present it.

If you want check out the drive's performance just to get an idea it's even functioning as expected, run something like Crystal Disk Mark.
