Hdd power requirements

I have two ide hdd and two usb to ide but only one power adapter will the to hdd the work of one power adapter. Thank

No. Two HDD's on one power adapter will overload the power adapter and damage it and possibly both HDD's as well.

I thought as much.... I was using a psu but all it did was make the hdds click. But the power brick +hdd works fine. Any reason that would happen?

I can't say for sure since I don't have a schematic but I suspect the power brick has different voltages and/or connections than a PSU. It may also have an internal circuit board that communicates with the drive somehow or conditions the power in some way that a PSU doesn't.

Maybe the power supply is bad? I have 12v/5v.
