HDD shows up under Device Manager/BIOS, but not Disk Management.

I did a fresh Windows install yesterday on a SSD and got a new HDD for games an such.

For the lift of me I can not get the drive to show up.

It shows up under Device Manager and in the BIOS, but I get nothing when I go to Disk Manager. Also when I double click on it under devices and try to populate volumes I get a message saying 'Volume information for this disk cannot be found.

I plugged in another old HDD and it shows up without an issue.

Am I doing something wrong or is the drive bad?

At a glance the SMART status is a pass, but I'm running an extended test now and I hopefully know more in an hour and a half...

Hey there, manifesto316!

I'm sorry to see you struggle with your WD Black drive. 🙁 Keep us posted with the SMART results from the extended test of the DLG tool.
Meanwhile, I'd recommend you to check the warranty of your drive on our website, just in case: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=p9V8ai
I'd also try connecting it to another computer and see how the drive will appear there. Have you also tried to 'Rescan for disks' from Disk Management, though?

Keep us updated!

Well Windows decided to do a restart so I had to start the extended test again.

I got the drive last week from Amazon so I can easily return it.

I have rescanned/refreshed the list and it's still the same. I'll give connecting it to a another computer after the test is done.

UPDATE: I completed the test and it says everything is fine so I don't know what the issue could be.

Huh, that is strange.
It still doesn't show up when you rescan the drives in diskmanagement?

If not, you can try to check the disk with diskpart.
From RUN command (WINDOWS + R) run diskpart, or open a command prompt and type in diskpart

Once diskpart is open type: "list disk"
There it should show all connected drives, you may be able to recognize which is which by size.

Does it show your WD drive? (it should be the sole 1TB drive)

Hi again, manifesto316!

What about connecting the WD Black to another computer? Did you try that already?
Another thing you could try is resetting BIOS using one of the methods listed here: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
However, you should keep in mind that this will return your BIOS settings back to factory defaults, so you'd need to re-configure them after the reset.
I'd suggest doing this after giving @Lannister's suggestion a try and check if the HDD will show up after the diskpart/list disk command.

Keep us posted! :)

I had the same problem and found a bunch of ways to fix it but the easiest by far is to go Here:bounce: and DL Acronis True Image WD Edition Software. Install and Run it. then scroll down till you see the block labeled Disk Management. In that box click the first choice, Add New Disk. then you will see a list of all drives the one that shows only in BIOS should be highlighted automatically, but if not choose the drive that has no letter assigned. 😉 On the Next Screen you can pick what letter you want for it and a few other things like partition size and stuff. Unless you know what your doing I suggest leaving every thing as it is except maybe the Drive letter. Then that's about it. My new Drive (New 2 g(F: ) ) showed up under My Computer before Acronis was even done running. If you have any other Questions about the program the User Guide PDF is HERE:bounce: Hope that helps.
