Hello. The problem came up since I bought my laptop a few months ago. Some days nothing happens, but when it start it won't stop for a few minutes, and it's really annoying. Basically the HDD spins down, make one click and then spins up. The time between every click is around 8-10 seconds, sometimes less. The clicking noise is the same, when I put the laptop to sleep or shut it down, right before it turns completely off. /ASUS laptop X540SA, 500GB, Windows 10 x64/.

Solution
Well, according to the SMART data, the drive is in a healthy shape.
Yet, sometimes, mechanical flaws could not be represented by the SMART data. This is why, my suggestion would be not to keep important data stored on the drive and contact the manufacturer's Support or the place you got the laptop from. The guys over there should be able to help you out and provide some information on the matter.

Cheers,

Hi there peekpeek,

In my view, the first thing you should really do is to back up the data stored on the drive. After that, you can test the drive, as Colif suggested.
Taking into account that you got the drive several months ago, it should be under warranty. This is why, you can just contact the place you got it from and see what the guys over there will tell you.

Cheers,

Your Hard drive is damaged. Clicking sound is the indication may be head of your hard disk stuck somewhere and platter can get damaged. If you can access your data, immediately take backup and replace the hard drive.

Thanks for your answers guys, but I just wonder why when using Ubuntu the problem never appears, only with Windows 10? Also when I'm doing something on my laptop it's quiet, but when I go somewhere and come back it's already started clicking.
