Hello. 😊
I want to instal a on off switch for mine HDD that i use for storage..
It's kinda loud and i don't use it all the time..
Which of the 5 wires should i cut and use switch on, if i use this SATA power cable (I will instal the on off switch on this cable: image)
( I know i can use external ssd or hdd, or use hot swap bays etc.. Also don't like windows drive sleep it still powers up time to time..)
I want to use internal. and use switch.. I already did some testing etc.. It seems middle red wire that uses +5 vdc gives power to drive, so i need to instal only one switch? Tested on ssd and 3.5 hdd
(So i don't damage drive and so on, i can simply power off/on PC if need be. Before using switch)

Don't want to waste more $
I simply need a button aka switch, to disconnect the electricity from drive.
Seems i will have to sacrifice one old hdd for hard testing as noone can simply tell me. What wires need the switch.
For now red wire will have one (as it seems it powers the drive) Will see if it goes in flames xD Or should i add more switches on orange and yellow wires..
Simply wanted to know which pins give the power.
I was removing sata cable by hand before.. As i power up the hdd once a week.

I listed those things because they have FAR more protection circuitry than a simple on/off switch.

If you just switch the 5v line, the drive is still seeing the 12v line. And/or 3.3v line.

But....

What do you mean "protection circuitry"
If i flip the switch when the PC is Off.
(Off as i mean it's Off the power at all, i have the power strip with Red power switch so theres no power at all..)
Does it make any difference if the switch is between wires? I think no?

As i cut wire and put switch in.. On/Off
If i don't use the switch when PC is on. It dosen't make any difference if there is or is not a switch there.
